Moon Meadows Farm, a story passed on to us about the land

Moon Meadows is approximately 55.88 acres of land located in the Northwest corner of Sullivan, N.H., 9 aerial miles northeast of Keene, N.H. The property consists of upland ridge top forest that has been cleared and/ or selectively cut for timber and agricultural purposes. There are two perennial streams originating or passing through the property. Only 2.5 acres of land is not forested with the remaining land being comprised of mixed uneven aged hardwoods and softwoods. The soils are mainly shallow and acidic and of a sandy to fine sandy loam type. Intermittent springs and depressional wetlands are few and scattered. They represent less than 5% of the total acreage.
The property sits on a north/ south migratory flyway and as such receives a great deal of low to high level activity from waterfowl and raptors. 46 species of birds have been observed to breed on the property. The habitat is suited for songbirds as well as waterfowl and raptors. Many species of mammals have been observed or sighted on Moon Meadows. Thirty species have been recorded through sighting of tracks, scat, browse or visual observation. Species such as coyote, red fox, otter, skunk, bear and several species of small mammals are just a few of those recorded.
The most recent timbering activity occurred in 1984. Since that time activities such as brush hogging, mowing and pruning have been undertaken as a way to enhance habitat for the species mentioned above. The primary management goal for this property is to enhance wildlife habitat. Limited selective cutting has been and will continue to be done as one method of maintaining habitat and obtaining fuel wood for Moon Meadows Farm.  A wooden post and beam house was built in 1981.
